| Secondary title: | Overuse injuries among cyclists |
| Secondary abstract: | Background: Cycling is a rapidly growing activity that people advantageously use for recreation and as a form of transport. The main purpose of this article is to present the most common overuse injuries among professional and recreational cyclists. Methods: The literature review was performed using electronic databases. All available studies published by 2014 were included in the review. Results: Twelve studies matched the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Results indicate that overuse injuries in cyclists are common. From 84 to 87 % of cyclists experienced at least one of overuse injuries in a period longer than one year. The majority (74.5–94.2 %) of these injuries were classified as mild and did not require special medical attention or forced the cessation of activities for a longer period. Overuse injuries among cyclists differ significantly between recreational and professional cyclists in terms of injury type and affected body segment. Conclusions: Overuse injuries among cyclists are common. The most common overuse injuries are compression neuropathies, anterior knee pain and low back pain. |
