Abstract

Statistične analize so bile izvedene s programskim orodjem SPSS. Izvirnost/pomembnost prispevka: Prispevek predstavlja prvo strokovno študijo o osebnostnih značilnostih in specialnih strokovnih znanjih strokovnih delavcev v slovenskem zaporskem sistemu.

Secondary title: Professional Competences and Personal Characteristics of Specialised Staff in Slovenian Prisons
Secondary abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to present personal characteristics and special professional skills of specialised staff, which according to the specialised workers in Slovenian prisons, are important for working with prisoners. Design/Methods/Approach: The study took place from April to May 2017. A questionnaire was sent, in the form of an online survey, to 97 specialised workers in Slovenian prisons and a correctional home. Statistical analyses were conducted using the programme tool SPSS. Findings: Specialised workers stated that determination, empathy, communicativeness, reliability, and tolerance are the most important personal characteristics in their work. Majority of them highlighted communication with difficult clients, ability of conflict resolution, basic psychological knowledge, knowledge of the legislation and conducting consultative interviews, as the most important professional competences. Research Limitations / Implications: The main limitation of the study is seen in the size and structure of the sample, which prevents the generalization of results to all groups of specialised staff. Furthermore, there is a possibility that specialised workers, who participated in the study, gave socially desirable answers due to their fear of disclosure and possible subsequent sanctions. Practical Implications: Findings present the basis for further discussion, possible changes in the training of the specialised staff and assistance to the prison management in the future search of prospective personnel who would conduct professional treatment of prisoners. Originality/Value: The paper presents the first study on personal characteristics and special professional skills of specialised staff in the Slovenian prison system.
