Abstract

Oceniti mora njegovo fizično stanje in v primeru nepravilnosti ukrepati, saj zgodnje intervencije, zdravljenje in terapija pozitivno vplivajo na otrokovo nadaljnje življenje.

Secondary title: Midwife's role in newborn examination
Secondary abstract: Introduction: A midwife is a healthcare professional in the field of pregnancy, birth and the after-birth period. She is the person who is present at birth and is the first person to see the new-born when he/she arrives. It is her job to evaluate the adjustment of the infant to the new environment and to take action if necessary. She must evaluate the baby’s physical condition and act immediately if there are irregularities as early treatment and intervention have a positive effect on the future life of the child. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to present a clinical evaluation of a new-born and determine the midwife’s role in the process and also determine the opinions of the students of midwifery regarding this role. Work methods: In the first part of the diploma work the descriptive method was used. This section includes local and foreign professional literature. In the second part of the research we used the causal nonexperimental method and gain results with the help of an online question poll. Results: It was discovered that after their completed studies the majority of midwifery students practice the clinical examination of the new-born, but they also stress that during the study period they do not gain enough practical experience for evaluating the new-borns. Discussion and conclusion: Research shows that parents are happier with the evaluation if it is undertaken by a midwife. One of the wishes of the profession is a continual care of the family while in hospital care. It was also discovered that the students would gladly practice this after completing their studies. This creates the question of why this has not been done yet. Further research is required in this area, but we believe that with further education and changes in the learning plan, the competence of midwives can be extended in this area. If the midwife (physiological birth) and a gynaecologist (pathological birth) can assist during birth, why couldn’t the midwife (healthy new-born) and a paediatrician (sick new-born) assist after.
