magistrsko delo
Abstract

Cross-curricular integration of geography and mathematics in primary school |
Secondary abstract: |
Cross-curricular integration is becoming more frequent and popular in primary schools, owing to the integration of knowledge from various educational fields and their transferability to real-life situations. The central aim of this master's thesis is to prepare some didactic materials for lessons with cross-curricular integration of geography and mathematics. The preparation of materials was based on the theoretical analysis of cross-curricular integration between the above-mentioned subjects. Key findings are summarized in the theoretical part and they are connected to the theory of cross-curricular integration. The importance of geography and mathematics in primary school is also presented in this part. Curricular documents for primary school are presented with the emphasis on the analysis of curricula for geography and mathematics. We also presented their cross-curricular integration. At the end of theoretical part, we determined the mathematical criteria for cross-curricular integration with geography. The criteria were based on the overview and the analysis of selected textbooks for geography. Based on the findings, we designed a collection of exercises for cross-curricular lessons in the applicative part. The collection consists of eight units. Each unit includes a presentation with introductory explanations and some exercises for students. We also added the key to exercises and some extra suggestions and explanations for teachers. The results of our survey are presented in the empirical part of the thesis. The survey was conducted among primary school teachers of geography and mathematics. The questionnaire included a set of questions about cross-curricular integration in primary school and about the opinions of teachers on the collection of exercises that we prepared. According to the results of our survey, cross-curricular integration is important for teachers and they use it in their classrooms to different extents. The teachers that took part in our survey also reported certain issues connected to cross-curricular integration. They integrate geography and mathematics in some parts of the curriculum. Our collection of exercises received a positive feedback. |
