Abstract

Slednji so veseli druženja, pomoči in posledično razbijanja monotonosti, družabnikom pa druženje s človekom z demenco predstavlja nove izkušnje, modrosti in pridobivanje energije.

Secondary title: The importance of companionship for preventing the social exclusion of people with dementia
Secondary abstract: We are social beings, so socializing with our loved ones means a lot to us. It is often the case that older people are lonely because of reduced social network. Solitude is solved in different ways, one of them is companionship. A person with dementia and a companion perform leisure activities together, most often solve mind exercises, play board games or go for a walk. Companionship is usually done individually, and sometimes is joined by relatives of people with dementia. The research presented in the empirical section, aims to show that companionship is an important factor that can contribute to a better quality of life for people with dementia. Comunication with people with dementia depends on the individual, but at the same time is very similar among them. It is important that we learn communication from people with dementia and that we are respectful and understanding. Non-verbal communication is as well important as verbal communication. The results of the survey show that companionship have special importance to people with dementia and as well to companions. People with dementia are happy about the companionship, the help they get and breaking of monotony. To companions, companionship presents new experiences, wisdom and energy. My suggestions are to strengthen companionships by promoting and raising awareness of its importance for the person with dementia and also for the companion himself, by encouraging organizations targeting the older people to include companionships and strengthening companionships in homes for older people where the residents are often lonely.
