Abstract

Secondary title: The abuse of licit and illicit drugs amongst the youth
Secondary abstract: Drugs are substances, which have an effect on normal human bodily functions, human psyche and health. Licit and illicit drugs can, especially after long term consumption, leave visible short and long-term consequences for humans. Children are especially vulnerable when it comes to drug usage, particularly during adolescence. In adolescence children begin to learn about licit and illicit drugs. The effects of drugs are stronger, and the consequences are more dire and dangerous with children, than they are with adults. With the constant emergence of new substances and the relatively easy availability of licit and illicit drugs, children are all the more at risk of encountering drugs. The master thesis contains a research in which children from Ljubljana and Maribor at the age of 13-17 were surveyed about the consumption of licit and illicit drugs. They survey was made on the web portal 1ka and spread to children through social media, friends, elementary schools and high schools. In addition to the survey, we also reviewed police statistics on juvenile delinquency in the field of illicit drugs and examined whether drug abuse among juveniles had increased. We found that there is no trend in increasing drug abuse compared to previous years. We also examined the claim that the most commonly abused illicit drug is cannabis, which we confirmed with the Wilcoxon test. We then checked for age differences in the cannabis experience, which we verified with the Mann-Whitney test and confirmed that there were statistical differences. Also, when testing the hypothesis of gender association and cannabis experience, we concluded that there was no association in our sample, so we rejected it using the chi-square test. With the latter hypothesis, we tested the association between place of residence and cannabis experience and confirmed with a hi-square test that an association existed in our sample. Finally, with logistic regression, we wanted to examine which of the three factors, age, gender and place of residence, most influences cannabis consumption. The analysis showed that only the age variable can be said to have a direct impact on children’s experience with cannabis.
