Abstract

Asociacije učencev so pomemben del učnega procesa.

Secondary title: Elementary studentsʼ associations and attitudes towards chemistry
Secondary abstract: Association is an important part of the learning process. Talking about association we are talking about the connection between elements of taught in which thinking of one element leads to another. Association is important for both the students who acquire knowledge through association, and just as much for the teachers who can gain insight into students' perceptions. A total of 851 pupils attending the sixth and the ninth grade of primary schools in different regions of Slovenia participated in the study that was carried out based on the quantitative analysis research. The students filled out questionnaires, where they were asked to write down ten associations to the word "chemistry". Quantitative analysis of the questionnaires’ results showed that the associations related to experimental and practical work in chemistry lessons were the most frequent. The results also demonstrated that compared to the sixth-grade students, the ninth-grade students used scientific term-based associations. It was also established that students’ attitudes towards chemistry in the sixth and in the ninth grades were different. While the sixth-graders wrote down more associations that conveyed a positive attitude towards chemistry, this attitude deteriorated in the upper grade. The findings demonstrated that association and association tests could be a valuable tool for discovering students’ attitudes in chemistry education.
