Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂRoman military during the principate period
Secondary abstract: This thesis aims to present an overview of the Roman military from the time of Augustus to the Crisis of the Third Century. The first part provides the historical background, describing the evolution of the Roman armed forces from its earliest known form to the organisation that Augustus took over. The societal changes that were inextricably linked with the army's evolution are also described. The second part gives a systemic analysis of the Roman military, as it was in the principate period. Its organisation, equipment and tactics are described in depth. The everyday life of its members is shown, as well as what the appearance of an average battle most likely was. Sieges, which became ever more common as the period in question progressed, are also analysed. The third part deals with Roman naval units, which were often crucial in expanding and defending the Empire's frontiers. An analysis of their organisation is provided, as well as the characteristics and armament of the ships themselves and the tactics used in naval engagements.
