Abstract

Secondary title: Impact of divorce on children of preschool age - from the point of view on nursery school
Secondary abstract: Divorces and separations of partners, those with and those without children, are nowadays a growing phenomenon. Since the number of parents who get a divorce is increasing, single-parent families are more and more frequent. In such families, children live with one parent, while they only have sporadic contact with the other parent or no contact at all. Divorce of parents affects individual children differently. This paper is comprised of a theoretical and an empirical part. The theoretical part first provides a general presentation of families, divorce, conflict environment, custody as well as violence and abuse within families. We go on to present emotional distress of children, the consequences it has on their childhood and adulthood and traumatic events. Emotional and social types of development are briefly presented. We also outline how professionals, kindergarten teachers and parents can help children in the time of their parents' divorce. The empirical part of the paper presents the results of the research studying opinions of kindergarten teachers on how divorce affects preschool children. The research sample is comprised of kindergarten teachers and teaching associates from different parts of Slovenia. The data were collected through a survey and processed using the SPSS program. We were interested in the opinion of kindergarten teachers on how divorce of parents affects different types of children's development, what behaviour is displayed by children of divorced parents and how often as well as what is their influence and role in helping children during/after their parents' divorce. It was determined that kindergarten teachers mostly believe that divorce does affect children. They also believe that parents' divorce has a different influence on different types of children's development. Based on the obtained results, we determined that, according to most of kindergarten teachers, they can help children to some extent in this stressful process.
