Abstract

Secondary title: Suicidal behaviour, depression and smartphone addiction among adolescents
Secondary abstract: Suicidal behaviour, depression and smartphone addiction among adolescents are problematic areas that had not been explored before in Slovenia as a part of a single study. The aim of the research was to assess suicide risk among Slovenian adolescents and to explore the connection between suicidal behaviour and depression, interpersonal theory of suicidal behaviour and smartphone addiction. The sample included 302 adolescents from seven different secondary schools with four-year educational programmes. The data was obtained with the help of six different assessment tools. The findings show that 35, 8 % of adolescents have had suicidal thoughts and that suicidal ideation is more common in girls; however, differences in expression of suicidal ideation between age groups were not found. Both of the studied constructs of interpersonal theory - "thwarted belongingness" and "perceived burdensomeness" - showed to be positively correlated with suicidal ideation. The symptoms of depression were the most important indicators of suicidal behaviour, while smartphone addiction positively correlated with suicidal ideation. The contribution of this study is, among other things, our own translation of The Smartphone Addiction Scale and a broader picture of suicidal behaviour and related risk factors.
