Abstract

Secondary title: Impact of childhood traumatic events on health in adulthood
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Today, with our fast pace of life we frequently encounter many of stressful situations. Some of them we overcome without even noticing it, however some of them, more traumatic, will stay anchored somewhere deep in our subconscious. When this happens, we are talking about a traumatic experience that can escort us throughout life and leaves consequences in all areas of an individual's life. Purpose of the final work was to explore how a childhood traumatic experience affects health in adulthood. Methods: We used a qualitative research methodology with an inductive approach to work. The study included three experts in the fields of psychotherapy, sociology and child psychiatry, who deal with patients suffering from childhood traumatic events on a daily basis. Data were obtained by the method of an in-depth interview whitch was processed with content analysis. Results: Based on the gathered evidence, we found that a traumatic childhood experience directly affects the individual who experienced trauma. It manifests itself troughout all stages of life and leaves physical, psychological and developmental consequences in a person's health. Discussion and conclusion: A traumatic experience affects an individual's physical, mental and social life. Individuals often have problems with physical and emotional health, and show deviations from general behavioral and social norms. When a trauma is detected, appropriate medical intervention and proper treatment are the first to contribute to a positive outcome of the treatment. Poor education and overburdening of the medical staff can only worsen and deepen the patient's experience of trauma.
