Abstract

Secondary title: Emotional competence and depression in adult children of alcoholics
Secondary abstract: The purpose of the master's thesis was to investigate and compare the emotional competence and incidence of depressive states of adult children of alcoholics and non alcoholics and the connection between emotional competence and depression in adult children of alcoholics. The theoretical part presents detailed aspects of emotions and their meaning, as well as the concept of emotional competence, which we have divided into six subcategories. We also described depressive states and the factors associated with them and an emphasis on alcoholism in the family and particulary aspects of functioning of adult children of alcoholics. The empirical part presents the results of a quantitative study involving 425 individuals of which 261 were identified as adult children of alcoholics and 164 of those who did not have an alcoholic parents. The results imply that there were no statistically significant differences between adult children of alcoholics and adults who were not adult children of alcoholics in any of the subdimensions of emotional competence. However, adult children of alcoholics have been shown to be more prone to depression compared to adults without the dynamics of alcoholism. Decreased emotional competence in adult children of alcoholics has also been shown to be associated with more frequent symptoms of depressed moods.
