Abstract

Secondary title: Determining the influence of dimensions, weight and position of the commissioning unit on productivity
Secondary abstract: It is beyond a doubt that efficient and well-planned picking process is extremely important for many companies. Even though there are many different automated picking systems on the market, manual picking systems still prevail in distribution systems and warehouses. Manual picking processes are both time consuming as well as have a negative impact on human health. Therefore, it is also important to further develop manual picking in order to make it more efficient and faster and to have less negative impacts on the pickers. The thesis focuses on the productivity analysis of manual picking of light cargo placed on racks, which pickers can reach without the help of technical equipment such as forklifts, ladders and similar. Experimental methods and statistical analysis have shown that both the weight and the size of the picking unit have an impact on productivity. In addition, the height of the shelf affects how long it takes to remove a picking unit from the rack. Therefore, productivity could be improved by better distributing picking units on the rack. In other words, it would take less time to remove a picking unit off the rack if they were properly distributed.
