Abstract

Secondary title: Removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils with weak acids
Secondary abstract: The thesis presents a study on heavy metals, their properties, impact on the enviroment. In particular are presented methods for removing heavy metals from contaminated soils. Among all removing methods, washing the soil with weak acids, which can be done by the ex situ or in situ method, is presented in more details. Acids affect heavy metals by increasing their mobility and the efficiency of leaching metals from the ground. We performed an experiment, where we remove zinc and cadmium with hydrochloric acid, in which the results were compared to results of removal with citric acid from scientific researches. We found that washing the soil with citric acid is more efficient, because the extraction effect is greater and the possibility of secondary contamination is lower than removal with hydrochloric acid. I also did an analysis of research on soil contamination with heavy metals in Slovenia between 2004 in 2008, which showed that Slovenia is mostly not contaminated with heavy metals, they are only present at locations, where mining and artillery activity was once performed.
