Abstract

Secondary title: Patient empowerment – an important element of controlling of chronic non-communicable diseases
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Empowerment level affects the number of chronic non-communicable diseases and is related to determinants of health. The objective of the master’s thesis was to assess the empowerment level of chronic patients and the relationship between determinants of health and empowerment. Research Methods: We used a quantitative research methodology. Two validated questionnaires were used to assess the empowerment level. Research was carried out in three family medicine clinics and one general medicine clinic encompassing 201 participants with at least one chronic non-communicable disease. Data was statistically treated with SPSS software and hypotheses were verified with the Kruskal-Wallis H test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The empowerment level among the respondents is high (M = 74,72; SD = 20,05). The participants reached the average empowerment level in all dimensions and are sufficiently active in self-managing their health. There are statistically significant differences in empowerment in regard to education (χ2(2) = 44,091; p < 0,001) and age (χ2(2) = 25,718; p < 0,001), while no statistically significant differences were identified in regard to sex (U = 4867,500; p = 0,658). Conclusion: It was found that most respondents were suffering from multimorbidity. In order to raise the empowerment level it is necessary to identify empowerment factors, to actively include the patient in the medical treatment process and to increase participation at the family medicine clinic. In theory, empowerment is still hard to define and there are no unified criteria for measuring the empowerment of chronic patients within an empirical approach, therefore further research is needed, including interventions for increasing the empowerment level and improving the quality of life of chronic patients.
