Abstract

Dobrobit živali pomeni dobro formo in dobro počutje. Osnovni kriteriji za dobrobit so: pravica do življenja brez lakote in žeje, pravica do udobja, pravica do življenja brez bolečin, poškodb in bolezni, pravica do normalnega vedenja, pravica do življenja brez strahu in stisk.

Secondary abstract: The field of animal protection in Slovenia and the European Union is regulated by law. However, many people still do not consider animals similar to humans; they are living and sentient beings, capable of sensing the world and integrated into all parts of our lives. The anthropocentric theory sees humans as the masters of nature. Our attitude towards the human-animal relationship is reflected in four principles: animal welfare, animal rights, sustainable development and putting humans first. Animal welfare means better form and well-being for the animals. The basic criteria for good animal welfare are the right to a life without hunger and thirst, the right to comfort, the right to a life without pain, injury and disease, the right to normal behaviour and the right to a life without fear and distress. There are many organizations and societies fighting for animal rights and protection in Slovenia and the EU. A great emphasis in Slovenia and the EU is put on the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes. The EU regulations present the basis for animal protection legislation in the national legal systems. Vivisections are cruel forms of animal torture that cause the animals to suffer during the experiments, even though alternative methods exist. In 2013 the Citizens' Initiative put forth the Stop Vivisection Initiative, which proposes a ban on animal experimentation. A major part in reducing the suffering of animals used for experimentation and their protection as well plays the Three Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement).
