Abstract

Secondary title: Fear of crime in Ljubljana
Secondary abstract: Like crime, also the fear of crime is one of the problems of all modern societies. Fear of crime is being researched by many researchers, becouse fear of crime can have many negative consequences on life. It is a complex phenomenon that often presents even a bigger problem than crime itself. Fear of crime is related to a person's fear of personal victimization, concern about crime and perception of (in)security and crime. It is influenced by various socio-demographic and socio-psychological factors. In the theoretical part of the master's thesis, we presented a theoretical framework, which enables easier and better understanding of the fear of crime and we also reviewed previous studies made in Slovenia. In our research work we presented the results of primary statistical data analysis. We studied the fear of crime among the inhabitants of Ljubljana, the data were collected through an online survey, which was active between 31.10.2019 and 31.1.2020. We used multivariate statistical methods to check whether gender, previous victimization and education affect the level of fear of general crime in the population of Ljubljana and whether they affect the level of excitement due to cybercrime. Our sample is not random and it is not representative, because of that we had to be careful in generalizing the results to the population. We found that compared to men in Ljubljana, women report a higher level of fear of crime, they are more excited about cybercrime, and victimization with cybercrime in the next 12 months would have more serious consequences for women. We found that previous victimization and education do not affect the level of fear of general crime among the inhabitants of Ljubljana and also they do not affect the level of excitement due to cybercrime.
