Abstract

Secondary title: Conducting experiments from the thematic set substances in lessons of environmental studies in primary school
Secondary abstract: The master's thesis titled Conducting Experiments from the Thematic Set Substances in Lessons of Environmental Studies in Primary School is intended to highlight the importance of experimentation in lessons of environmental studies. The research is focused on the thematic set Substances where, due to the recommendations of the curriculum, this exact set requires active exploration of substances and substance changes. The theoretical part includes an introduction of the subject environmental studies, its importance in the early stages of learning about natural sciences, a description of natural science procedures as well as a detailed presentation of experimental learning and results of foreign research. In the empirical part of the current study we describe the results of our research, the data of which has been obtained through a questionnaire among primary school teachers who teach in the first, second and third grade. The analysis of the online survey questionnaire shows that the latter are aware of the importance of conducting experiments in the thematic set Substances; furthermore, they often conduct them in their own classes (at least three per year). This being the case, the teachers also express a great need for quality collection of experiments and point out the lack of appropriate measuring instruments. They implement demonstration experiments and experimental work in their classes because they are, similarly to many authors of published research, aware that students gain additional practical and associable knowledge through experimentation, as well as obtain experience and new skills. The conclusion includes a didactically completed example for experimental student work (fruit drying).
