Abstract

Secondary title: Living with ulcerative colitis: a case study
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects many young people. Patients with ulcerative colitis, a chronic disease constantly face obstacles that make their daily lives more difficult. Both relatives and nursing staff play an important role in overcoming the problems, encouraging patients, monitoring their health condition and educating them on their illness. Methods: For the theoretical part of our diploma thesis we used a descriptive method of work. We used a qualitative methodology for the research. We treated the patient according to the conceptual model of Virginia Henderson. Based on life and identified nursing needs, we highlighted nursing problems and made a nursing plan. Results: With our patient, the most exposed nursing diagnoses, that develop at the onset of the disease are poor appetite, difficulty in defecation, lower abdominal pain and fear. Due to receiving a biologic drug called adalimumab, her health is now improving. Discussion and conclusion: Ulcerative colitis affects the daily life of the patient and also her relatives. It is important that patients are continuously educated about their illness and remain independent.
