Abstract

S tečajem QGIS smo zaposlenim približali prednosti orodja QGIS, jim predstavili njegove zmogljivosti ter razbili morebitne predsodke in nelagodje pred neznanim orodjem.

Secondary title: A study of the possibilities for migrating from ArcGIS to open source QGIS
Secondary abstract: In the era of informatics, GIS tools are fundamental tools used at the Geological Survey of Slovenia. The most popular among them is ArcGIS. However, due to high prices of ArcGIS licences the number of licences we can afford is lower than the number of potential users. Therefore, a few years ago we proposed the migration to free and open code tool QGIS. As there is a pressing need for more licences among our users and the future of licencing is unclear, we conducted a research on the possibilities for migration to QGIS. In our research we used case study methodology. We gathered data as active observers, through questionnaires, interviews as well as from outer sources. We tried to find the answers to two questions: to which extent QGIS is a suitable replacement for ArcGIS and how to introduce this new tool into practice. We found QGIS to be a suitable tool in tasks of low to medium complexity, which are most of the tasks performed at the Geological Survey of Slovenia. On this basis it can be concluded that this tool can to a large extent replace ArcGIS. In tasks of high complexity QGIS cannot reach the performance of ArcGIS. However, it is rapidly developing also in this field. It can therefore be concluded that for the needs of the Geological Survey of Slovenia, the most appropriate appears to be the combined use of both tools: ArcGIS for solving complex tasks and QGIS for other tasks. During the introduction of QGIS we also encountered the resistance of our users against the new programme, which we tried to overcome with a training course and additional information and support. Through the QGIS training course we presented to our users the advantages and capacities of the QGIS tool and dispelled their prejudices and insecurities against unknown tools. Moreover, we opened a special channel for immediate support using MS Teams platform for resolving possible difficulties and questions and as an additional information source. The course was well accepted, and the first impressions are encouraging. However, the results can be properly evaluated only after a certain period of time. The channel for QGIS users currently does not have many visitors, but we expect the number of visitors to increase with more frequent use of QGIS.
