(diplomsko delo)
Abstract

The knowledge of proper use and self-medication of acetaminophen among nursing students |
Secondary abstract: |
Introduction: Paracetamol is a widely available antipyretic and analgesic. In the thesis we presented the basic pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics of paracetamol and investigated the extent to which nursing students familiar with the proper use of paracetamol and how much they know about the side effects of excessive usage.
Methods: We used a quantitative research methodology. To obtain data on students knowledge and self-medication with paracetamol, we used a questionnaire.
Results: 166 nursing students participated in the study. The study found that students were insufficiently aware of paracetamol, especially its side effects (81; 48.8 %) and the highest recommended daily dosage for an adult (55; 33.1 %). They are more careful about self- medication, as most take paracetamol when needed (125; 75.3 %). Students also consult friends or relatives about taking and dosing paracetamol (14; 8.4 %).
Discussion and conclusion: Paracetamol is prescribed to relieve mild to moderate pain and colds. Since it can also be bought without a prescription, many people think that it is an "innocent" ingredient. If for several days in a row we exceed the daily recommended dose for an adult, which is 4 g or 8 tablets, it can lead to liver and kidney damage. It is important that students, as future healthcare professionals, acquire appropriate knowledge about medicines and are aware of the importance of making others aware of the correct use of medicines, especially those that are easily accessible. |
