Abstract

The image of the "New Woman" (dt. Neue Frau), presented in the novel Gilgi, One of Us by the writer Irmgard Keun, became established in the period after the First World War and radically changed the role of women in society. Based on the analysis of the content of the novel and the discussion of the role of women in this era, we find parallels between fiction and reality. This is proof that she was not only an idealized emancipated woman, but a truly changed woman at the time. A detailed examination of the historical background, such as the influence of the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, the artistic movement of New Objectivity, and the traditional role of women, helped to facilitate the understanding of the work under reflection. In the life of a new woman, the areas of work, family, and love have changed and evolved significantly, as is clear from the novel’s story. Did the new role of a woman enable a balance between all areas or was it just in fiction? In one area or another, the protagonist eventually chooses her path and clearly proves that she is the personified "New Woman". |
