Abstract

Secondary abstract: Since the disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), the main strategic interest of all the countries of the Western Balkans is to join the European Union (EU) and thus the European and international space. Since its independence in 1991, the Republic of North Macedonia started a process of establishing a stable and safe country in order to join the Euro-Atlantic integrations, but it is facing internal ethnical conflicts and external impacts of unfavourable neighbouring countries, which complicate its European path and its integration into the EU. Its history has significantly impacted its presence and its goal to become a full member of the EU. With the signing of the Ohrid Agreement and improvement of the state of the Albanian minority, North Macedonia has established stability and safety within the country. The Agreement on good neighbourly relations with Bulgaria and the Prespa Agreement on the Greek-Macedonian name dispute have enabled North Macedonia to start its EU accession negotiations, which brings the country a step closer to the goal it has set already upon its declaration of independence. Based on professional literature, articles and official EU websites, the thesis discusses the EU enlargement policy in the case of the Western Balkans and the conditionality of EU membership for countries of South-East Europe in the case of the EU integration of North Macedonia. The thesis finds that EU integration of North Macedonia requires more than just a settlement in the name dispute. The dispute is extremely important for the normalization of the relations between North Macedonia and Greece, but North Macedonia has also to fulfil other established conditions for EU membership
