Secondary title: | SUBCLINICAL ATHEROSCLEROSIS IN PATIENTS WITH RELAPSING-REMITTING MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS – THE IMPORTANCE OF CLASSIC RISK FACTORS, INFLAMMATION AND GENETIC POLYMORPHISMS |
Secondary abstract: | Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disorder of central nervous system. Inflammation is present in all stages of multiple sclerosis and may create high susceptibility to subclinical atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a complicated process with multifactorial etiology and involves inflammatory, fibroproliferative and angiogenic responses. It is a chronic inflammatory process of the arterial wall and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is regarded as its early marker. The purpose of this study was to compare subclinical atherosclerosis, the role of inflammatory cytokines and the role of genetic polymorphisms between the group of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and healthy controls matched for age and sex. |
