Abstract

Secondary title: Solid Edge for technical drawing in primary school technology classes
Secondary abstract: Thesis assesses suitability and ability of Solid Edge drawing software tool for the purpose of technical drawing goals at Design and technology subject in primary school education. In the past ciciCAD drawing software tool was developed targeted for this purpose. Without updating, the last one was in the year 2000, it has become obsolete. Beside it is not capable of making three dimensional drawings and three dimensional models. Today, the most frequently used alternative, Google SketchUp, enables us to create a three dimensional drawing whereas it is not capable to follow technical drawing standardization. Recently, it also became payable, like many others powerful software tools for computer modelling and drawing. Drawing software tool, Solid Edge, has a free licence for educational purposes for teachers and students, which does not expire in one month as many others do, but is active for the entire time of schooling. Firstly we analyse drawing examples from textbooks and workbooks for primary schools engineering education. The examples are evaluated in accordance with the learning objectives and curriculum didactic recommendations. Than we present Solid Edge software tool for the purpose of drawing in two and three dimensions and three dimensional modelling. It’s advantages and capabilities are given and it is compared to other present and relevant software tools. It proves as user friendly drawing tool with a powerfull set of helpful functions. This is followerd by example proposals for introduction to technical drawing for the sixth grade, for Monge orthographic projection in the seventh grade and isometric projection and modelling in the eighth grade. For each grade we represent different examples, which cover also curiculum learning objectives. In the sixth grade they are associated with making wooden product, in the seventh grade with 3D printing and plastics and in the eight grade with internal combustion engines. For each grade software settings are suggested in order to reduce unnecessary tools. The proposed examples can also be used in the elective Design and technology subjects, where students draw technical documentation of their products.
