magistrsko delo
Abstract

Renovation of panonic farmhouse based on critical regionalism principles |
| Secondary abstract: |
The topic of the master’s thesis is one of the more burning issues of the Slovenian countryside. What to do with complexes some of which are well placed into the environment and are, considering the time they were built, well executed; but due to a completely different lifestyle in the country nowadays they can no longer serve its initial purpose. This is why they are frequently left empty and deteriorate.
The first part addresses three different topics which serve as basis for the project design in the second part of the thesis. The principles of the Critical Regionalism were chosen as theoretical framework. Defined by Mumford in the early 20th century, followed by Tzonis and Lefaivre, currently Frampton’s discussion (Towards a Critical Regionalism: Six Points for an Architecture of Resistance) is most prominent among wider audiences. We believe the trend of the movement indicates one of the possible directions of architectural practise which is trying at least partly to oppose the wild capitalist world and offer the people of our turbulent, fleeting time genuine experiences and to bring new hope. The chapter which follows critical regionalism is in a way its logical relation because if we wish to critically view the regional elements we must first know them well. This is why we have explored the history and characteristics of the traditional Panonic architecture, tried to understand why and how construction was conducted in the Pomurje area in the past and to determine the state of built environment of the Slovenian countryside in general today. The third part touches upon the problem of housing for the elderly; we find that it is necessary to promote forms of housing based on communities and thus offer our society and the older generation in particular many advantages.
The second part is a project based on the theoretical background. Firstly, plans of the existing built structure were made on the abandoned Jaušovec farmhouse in Veržej. The analysis and assessment of the buildings determined which of them were worth preserving and which were better to be demolished. This was the basis for the conceptual design of the Panonic farmhouse renovation; we also tried to find an answer to the question posed at the beginning.
The architectural design is a response to the context of the settlement and the current situation of the abandoned farmhouse; it attempts to provide a fresh, studied and diverse senior housing community programme in combination with non-institutional daycare and sustainable tourism to breathe new life into the complex on the one hand, and on the other hand, to offer a multi-purpose space for the community giving added value to the complex itself as well as Veržej and beyond.
The project strives to indicate a principle which applies an analytical approach and various professions with a wholesome creative vision to solve and make a quality renovation of similarly built structures in Slovenia. This approach is not only relevant from a standpoint of cultural heritage protection but because buildings which have always respected the cultural and natural landscape around them can use well designed programmes to offer an added value with high living culture in contemporary sustainable Slovenia. |
