diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract
Obseg in narava
preprečevanja kriminalitete v primeru podobnih kriznih razmer v prihodnosti.

Review of research on changing the crime rate during the covid-19 pandemic |
Secondary abstract: |
The objective of the present thesis was to provide an overview of the changes and the
degree of different types of criminalities during the covid-19 pandemic. A meta-analysis of
all the available studies from across the world relating to criminality was conducted. The
research highlighted that during the pandemic criminality changed as a result of reduced
public lifestyle and people having to stay indoors. Specifically, lower number of thefts and
burglaries was noted as a surprising benefit for society. Conversely, an increase in other
types of criminal behavior were noted, such as increased homicide rate among women,
who were forced to stay at home with their violent partners during the pandemic. This
was also the case for Slovenia. Furthermore, the pandemic also resulted in the increase of
other types of domestic violence. These events oftentimes go unreported, however, they
present a significant social and financial burden for the country. Cybercrime, such as
software hacking, also exhibited a rise due to home schooling and overall higher internet
usage. The elderly, lacking sufficient technical knowledge, were the most likely victims.
The present meta-analysis exposed some of the shortcomings of the current criminality
identification approaches, leading to unreliable data. The available research focused
primarily on larger cities, disregarding rural areas. Furthermore, children, women and
elderly oftentimes do not report violence, leading to falsely lower rates in the data. In
conclusion, the degree and nature of criminality during the covid-19 pandemic could be
beneficial for future prevention in case of similar crises. |
