Abstract

Nurses´ knowledge of amyotrophic leteral sclerosis |
Secondary abstract: |
Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, which control muscle movement. As the disease progresses, the patient quickly becomes independent and needs healthcare. So it si very important, that the nurse in well educated about the course of the disease, so that she can provide comprehensive care for the patient. She also hast i have good communication skills.
Methods: In empirical part we used quantitative methodology , in theoretical part we used descriptive research method. For gathering informations we used a survey questionare which had 18 close-ended questions. The questions referred to nurses' knowledge about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We analysed and graphically presented the colected data.
Results: Based on the analysis of the survey questionnaires, we found that most of the respondents had already heard about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and quite a few had already encountered with it. 87,5 % of all respondents correctly anwsered, that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease. 95 % of all respondents opinion is, that they should obtain more knowledge about this disease.
Discussion and conclusion : Analysis of the results show that most of the respondents have already encountered the disease and are quite well aware of it. However they believe that they need additional knowledge fort hem to take good nursing care for a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. They also think that they should have leraned more about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis during formal education. According to our foundings of the research, we advise the organisation of additional education for employees from a narrow field of expertise. |
