Abstract

Secondary title: The motives for education in the third period of life
Secondary abstract: Changes are the only constant of the modern society, and all its members must be able to adapt to them. Skills, abilities, and knowledge are necessary to adapt and successfully overcome any obstacles. It is crucial that people strive towards knowledge throughout their lives, as this is the only way they will become competitive within a society. It is therefore extremely important that older adults are also offered various forms and opportunities for active participation in the social environment. Non-formal education is one of the opportunities that enables older adults active (spare) time, upgrading and acquiring new knowledge and creating new social networks. This research is based on eight interviews with participants who educated themselves in the third period of life. The data shows that the motives for the participation are different and depend on the individual’s desire. The interviewees attach great value and importance to education, as it represents actively spent (spare) time and socializing. In addition to socializing and creating new social networks, it is also important for them to share the acquired knowledge. According to them, there should be even more connections and cooperation between the generations in the future.
