Abstract

Metode: Gradivo smo iskali v mednarodnih podatkovnih bazah PubMed, CINAHL in ScienceDirect. Že mladi začnejo s kajenjem, kar posledično vpliva na nastanek KOPB, slabo telesno zmogljivost, astmo, kronični bronhitis in še mnogo drugih.

Secondary title: The effect of cigarette smoking on health status in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common diseases globally, characterised by a gradual restriction of airflow. Tobacco smoke is the leading risk factor for COPD development, so smokers should be advised about smoking cessation. This thesis aims to systematically review, analyse and synthesise literature and investigate how smoking affects the health status of patients with COPD. Methods: We searched the international databases PubMed, CINAHL and ScienceDirect. We used Boolean operators to form a search string with keywords. The articles were critically evaluated using the Joana Briggs Institute (JBI) checklists. Selected literature was placed in the hierarchy of evidence (Polit & Beck, 2012). We carried out a thematic analysis of scientific and professional articles and synthesised the results. Taking into account the thematic analysis steps, we first synthesised the data derived from the articles using the steps by Braun & Clarke (2006). Results: Of the 819 articles obtained, five articles were included in the final analysis. The results showed that smoking greatly affects the health of COPD patients, their physical performance, disease progression and the development of many other diseases. Discussion and conclusion: In today’s society, people are also exposed to second-hand smoke in addition to active smoking. Young people start smoking, which results in COPD, poor physical performance, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and many others. However, smoking is one of the main factors deteriorating the health of patients with COPD.
