Abstract

Secondary title: Online sexsual harassment: prevalence and characteristics of victimisation among young adult females
Secondary abstract: The internet and the web offer users variety of opportunities for interpersonal interaction, social networking, and collaboration, but users also face many dangers associated with cybercrime. Common threats that arise from electronic communication and online services include various forms of cyberbullying and online sexual harassment, with victimization being particularly prevalent among younger users and women. A literature review shows that certain aspects related to victimization due to online sexual harassment are often the subject of scientific research; however, factors related to the online behaviour associated with this type of victimization are less researched. The purpose of the thesis was to identify the incidence of online sexual harassment and to study behavioural factors that are potentially related to victimization. Based on the routine activity theory and the lifestyle exposure theory, we planned a research and conducted an online survey among young adult women - users of the internet. Three hundred and five (305) respondents took part in the research, and the results showed that victimization due to online sexual harassment is not common, but certain forms of harassment (such as unwanted requests or messages with sexual content) occur more frequently. The most related factors to victimization are self-disclosure and the number of friends on social media. The findings also indicate that respondents are well aware of dangers related to online harassment and that they know how to protect themselves from it. The research presented is one of the few studies on online sexual harassment in relation to behavioural factors, while the findings are useful for raising awareness in the field of cyber security.
