zaključno delo

Abstract

Secondary title: Sociological perspective on jazz and popular music in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: In the final thesis I focus on the development of jazz in Slovenia and try to perceive it from a sociological point of view. In my research I rely on the concept of cultural formation. I analyze different attempts of writing jazz history in Slovenia, focusing on four periods: 1. the period of the first appearances of jazz elements in the 1920s; 2. the early post-war period; 3. the 1960s; 4. the period of formation of the %young jazz% scene in the 1980s. I point out the crucial role of the Radio Ljubljana dance orchestra as an institutionalized orchestra on jazz formation and make the case that %young jazz% scene formed independently of the Radio Ljubljana dance orchestra, thus splitting the jazz formation. I also focus on the relations between the jazz formation and other musical formations in Slovenia. I show the role that jazz formation had on the development of the oberkreiner music and the Slovenian schlager song. In addition, I research its relations with rock and punk, which were important for the establishment of the %young jazz% scene. Furthermore, I research the importance of musical socialization and education for jazz musicians today. I interview selected jazz musicians and teachers and show how jazz today is torn between the need for quality education and different views on what that is.
