Abstract

Secondary title: Effect of distractors in multiple choice tasks on solving performance in the Čmrlj physics competition
Secondary abstract: The Čmrlj competition is a competition in physics. The competition is held for students studying first year physics in high school. The curriculum of the competition includes the topics of physics in middle school. In this paper, we analyse the tasks that appeared in the Čmrlj competition in the school years 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. We analyse student success in a similar way as it is done at the national assessment of physics knowledge. For each year group, we divide students into four different groups, based on their overall scores. Based on these groups of students, the tasks are divided into five groups that reflect how successfully a particular task was completed. The main objective of the paper is to find out which characteristics of the tasks have a significant impact on how successful students are in solving these tasks. Since the Čmrlj competition consists entirely of multiple-choice questions, we try to find out what influence the individual answers offered have on how successful students are in solving these tasks. In addition to analysing how successful students are in solving the selected tasks at the competition, we also investigate to what extent one can compare or combine the general characteristics of the measured knowledge at the competition and at the national assessment of physics knowledge.
