diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract

Competencies of prison staff |
Secondary abstract: |
The prison officer represents the heart of the whole penal institution. Without him, a prison is not a prison, and it does not function. Despite that, the public, the media, most individuals, and the literature, do not pay much attention and they do not give them the necessary support.
Job requirements range from technical skills, theoretical knowledge, physical condition, all the way to mental health. What is also very important, is individual's personality. It has to be someone with a strong character, who is ready to face the complex and sometimes problematic behaviour of the prisoners. It has to be an emotionally stable person, who can manage to work in a unique, moral institution, design to sanction as well as rehabilitate convicts.
Everyday there is a new challenge, more diverse situations, and a higher number of prisoners. The employees have to be ready to learn constantly, eager for education and they have to be able to find the balance between working ''by the book'', meaning following the rules, and using common sense. In addition, it requires a good leadership, that shows interest in their employees and provides them with seminars.
The paper describes the tasks of a prison guard, which are not just establishing order and ensuring peace with the use of their authority. It analyses which competencies are needed to work and how they upgrade with experience. The thesis deals with how job demands and necessary training vary between some of the countries. Some attention is also paid to how to improve ongoing training and care for employees. |
