Abstract

V magistrski nalogi smo s pomočjo metode geometrijske morfometrije ovrednotili morfometrično variabilnost spodnje čeljustnice in lobanje treh operativnih taksonomskih enot (OTU) rodu Pteromys, in sicer P. momonga, P. volans in P. volans buechneri.

Secondary title: Morphometric variability of flying squirells (genus pteromys)
Secondary abstract: In the master 's thesis, we used the method of geometric morphometry to evaluate the morphometric variability of the mandible and skull of three operative taxonomic units (OTUs) of the genus Pteromys, namely P. momonga, P. volans and P. volans buechneri. Our goals were to verify the differences between the three flight OTUs and to test for secondary sexual dimorphism in this group of squirrels. 60 specimens of mandibles, 55 specimens of ventral skull, 56 specimens of lateral skull, and 40 specimens of dorsal skull were included in the analysis. We analyzed the differences between OTUs and the occurrence of secondary sexual dimorphism. We determined 17 support points on the lower jaw, 13 on the dorsal side of the skull, and 18 support points on the ventral and lateral sides of the skull. Analysis of morphological variability between the sexes showed no significant differences in sexual dimorphism in both size and shape of the mandible and skull in any of the OTUs. OTUs differed statistically in shape but not in size. The largest deviations occurred in OTU buechneri, in the form of an angular extension of the lower jaw and tympanic bladder, and the cerebral part of the skull.
