diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract

Cyberbullying on children - comparison between slovenia and portuagal |
Secondary abstract: |
Cyberbullying, inappropriate and hostile behavior, represents the dark side of the digital age in which we live. In addition to the positive benefits, the intensive use of the Internet has also had some negative consequences. In today’s digital age, cyberbullying is one of the negative consequences we are facing more and more often. Due to vulnerability and exposure, children face the dark side of the Internet at an early age, making online threats more and more common among young people.
In the diploma thesis we dealt with the issue of cyberbullying between Slovenian and Portuguese children. We presented which forms of cyberbullying the children encountered, the role of parents in the prevention of cyberbullying and which Slovenian and Portuguese organizations are fighting against violence in cyberspace. The purpose of the thesis was to determine whether children in cyberspace are also exposed to cyberbullying, what forms of cyberbullying they have already encountered and what is the connection between parents and children when it comes to cybersecurity. The goal, however, was to find out what percentage of children have already encountered online violence and how they would react to it. Slovenian and Portuguese children aged between 12 and 15 participated in the research.
That cyberbullying is a global problem can also be confirmed by the EU Kids Online 2020 survey, which showed that the percentage of children worldwide who encountered various forms of online violence ranged between 6% and 25% in 2010. In the same survey conducted in 2020, however, the number of children in contact with cyberbullying ranged from 7% to 45% (Smahel, D., Machackova, 2020). The most common form of cyberbullying that children encountered was receiving unpleasant, teasing, offensive messages. We find that 84% of Slovenian and 77% of Portuguese parents have no control over what their children do online. An important role in preventing the cyber threat to children is played by parents, who should explain to their children at an early age why some websites are bad, how to behave towards people in cyberspace and, above all, how to use the Internet safely. It is also important for children to know that in the event of cyberbullying, they can turn to their parents, teachers or organizations to help them. We have also prepared tips for safer use of the Internet, with which we want to encourage young people to use cyberspace more safely. |
