Abstract

Secondary title: Life of the elderly people with urinary incontinence
Secondary abstract: Urinary incontinence is still a taboo topic which is rarely spoken about among people and thus people rather shut themselves away than speak about it. Even though it is a nonthreatening disease, it causes a high social isolation because the elderly rather isolate themselves and stay at home because they are too embarrassed and because they feel they have an unpleasant urine odour. With this research we wanted to determine which issues appear among the elderly with urinary incontinence. We were interested whether they recognise the risk factors of incontinence issues, how well they are acquainted with urinary incontinence, with whom among medical staff they share their problems, and who they expect will help them the most. Forty elderly people with urinary incontinence took part in the research. All the respondents visited urogynecology clinic at Dr. Jože Potrč general hospital in Ptuj. With the aid of the questionnaire we have gathered corresponding answers to previously raised questions. The results have shown that of 40 respondents 17 respondents at the most have issues because of fear of unpleasant smell and thus rather stay at home and don’t socialize. With the elderly there is also present fear of wetness and fear of being lonely. They are also bothered about not getting to the toilet in time. Half of the respondents (50%) have sought help because of the loss of small amounts of urine associated with coughing, sneezing, laughing and lifting heavy loads, which points out to stress urinary incontinence. All forty (100%) respondents answered that they mostly share their problems with their doctor who presents them and recommends nurse’s further important proceedings. The public needs to be informed about the problems of urinary incontinence so that the elderly will seek help in time, because it is well known that it takes decades before they speak about these problems, and because the notion that urinary incontinence is something disgraceful is still widely present among the elderly.
