Abstract

Secondary title: Restrictions on personal liberty of an eldery in a nursing home – unsecured nursing unit
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Employees in nursing homes in Podravska region work with the most vulnerable group – these are the elderly adults whose rights can often be violated because they are often less independent and therefore rely more on their caregivers. This master thesis raises a research question: “What is the knowledge of nursing employees working in nursing homes (in open units) about personal right violation in elderly adults?” Methods: This thesis comprises of quantitative research which was conducted among nursing employees employed in nursing homes (in open units) in northeastern Slovenia (N=124). A questionnaire was selected as the main research method. We prepared the questionnaire ourselves and it is based on theoretical starting point and preliminary research of the field. To test our hypotheses, we used descriptive statistical data processing procedures. Results: 94% (N=92) of the respondents stated they are aware of the rights of free will in the elderly adults and only 6% do not know these rights. However, the desire to educate about the problematics of violation of rights in elderly adults was only shown in nurses with a degree and not in other employees. Most employees in nursing homes assure they do not violate rights of free will in elderly adults.88% of the interviewees are convinced that positive atmosphere and good communication between nursing staff and elderly adults in nursing home is in correlation with how many times the rights of the elderly adults will be violated. Discussion and Conclusion: The knowledge among nursing employees in the field of law and rights of the elderly adults in nursing homes is poor in general. The reason for social exclusion, discrimination and violation of rights is of preventive, curative and also social nature. Such problems may also occur due to ignorance to these problematics in the healthcare system.
