Abstract

Z raziskavo smo ugotavljali poznanost in osveščenost sladkornih bolnikov o sladkorni bolezni in njenih akutnih in kroničnih zapletih ter o pomenu zdravstvene vzgoje. Le-ta mora imeti ustrezno strokovno in pedagoško znanje. Sladkornega bolnika mora v obliki individualnega pogovora seznaniti o sladkorni bolezni in mu posredovati tudi ustrezna pisna navodila.

Secondary title: THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING PATIENTS ABOUT CHRONIC COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES
Secondary abstract: Diabetes is a chronic disease of progressive character. In addition to regular treatment and check-ups at their primary diabetes doctor, people with diabetes must take responsibility for a day-to-day care of their health. The role of a diabetic in the process of treatment is essential and necessary, but patients need to be adequately educated to help manage their disease. Understanding of diabetes and its treatment is one of the conditions for successful treatment, therefore education of patients is of vital importance first at the diagnosis of diabetes and later in the process of treatment. Modern health care education is based upon getting to know the patients - their age, lifestyle and level of education. It needs to be individualized according to the type of diabetes and the patient's needs. Methodology of research: The research was based on quantitative methodology. A type of questionnaire with 35 questions was used to gather information. 22 women (55 %) and 18 (45 %) men took part in the research. All those were the diabetics who were treated at the internal and abdominal ward of the general hospital in 2010. The research helped us find information concerning patients' awareness of diabetes, its acute and chronic complications as well as the importance of health education. The results show that our diabetics are well health educated due to a well-organized school for diabetics. To be more precised, 16 (41 %) got its education at the school and 15 (38 %) from a nurse. But all of them were pleased with the education they received. Conclusion: In diabetes treatment health education is very important, especially the role of a nurse. She needs to have competence and pedagogical knowledge. She has to deal with each patient individually and give him all information, oral and written, relating to his disease. Only a good health education can prevent further diabetes complications.
