Abstract

Correlation of demographic and anthropometric characteristics with the extent of passive joint mobility of the shoulder joint in retirement home residents |
Secondary abstract: |
Older adults are defined by a series of characteristics that include chronological age, social environment and functional ability. Everything that hinders physical activity contributes to the decrease of the range of motion. Methods: The study cohort included 63 subjects, aged 65 years or over. The average age of the cohort was 80.9 (SD 7.2) years. The correlation between the measurements of motion and age was calculated with the correlation coefficient. We compared the measured values of passive motion according to gender and dominance. Results: It was indicated that the passive range of motion of the shoulder joint in older adults does not decrease with age in the same way across all movements. There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) on internal rotation according to gender. We did not prove statistically significant differences according to dominance. We identified a statistically significant correlation between the pain and the passive range of motion in left shoulder joint in movement elevation through ante-flexion and elevation through abduction (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings have shown that age-related loss of range of mobility is specific for the direction of movement. |
