(diplomsko delo)
Abstract

Experiences that relatives go through when nursing a patient with the spinal cord injury |
Secondary abstract: |
Introduction: The spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most common injuries that can occur to an individual. People who usually take care of a person with the spinal cord injury are usually the person’s relatives. Taking care of the patient with the SCI can affect their relationship and leads them to emotional and psychological challenges. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate what relatives feel and experience while caring for someone close to them after the spinal cord injury.
Methods: We carried out a systematic review of the literature. The articles from databases such as PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus were used to review, analyze and synthesize the topic. Various surveys were included in the analysis, which were published between 2011 and 2021, in English speaking countries. We conducted a critical evaluation of the articles and made a thematic analysis.
Results: After a detailed review and analysis of fourteen articles that best matched the content of the dissertation, the results demonstrate that relatives are usually the primary caregivers of people with spinal cord injuries. The results also demonstrate that relatives are under a psychological pressure, they are more burdened, have less time for themselves, and many fall into depression.
Discussion and conclusion: Nursing a patient with the spinal cord injury greatly affects the quality of life of family caregivers, as it has various consequences for them, especially from the physical, mental and social perspective. Relatives often report that they felt isolated while they were caring for their loved ones, but they also felt that they had lost their identity and that their role has changed in a negative way because of taking care for a loved one with the spinal cord injury. |
