Abstract

Secondary title: Women in history and sociology textbooks in general secondary schools
Secondary abstract: This master's thesis discusses women in general secondary school textbooks for the subjects of history and sociology. The purpose of the thesis is to explore to what extent women are represented in these textbooks and how their roles are defined. In accordance with the selected scientific literature, we briefly describe the role and situation of women throughout history, from prehistoric times to contemporary era. The analysis of the nine textbooks has shown that women are underrepresented in the textbooks. We have also added two lesson suggestions to show how women could be included in the existing learning units, mostly by extending the units that are already in the textbooks. The survey answers or the opinions of history and sociology general secondary school teachers regarding representation of women in the textbooks show that the majority of the teachers think that women are not underrepresented in the textbooks for either subject. They believe however that more could be done and are in fact already including additional topics about women into their lectures. This master's thesis aims to emphasize the importance of representation of women in general secondary schools’ textbooks. We suggest that teaching topics in which women are more strongly present should be part of mandatory topics rather than electives, as it is the current practice in history and sociology syllabi and textbooks.
