Abstract

Secondary title: Improving sexual dysfunction by training pelvic floor muscles
Secondary abstract: Sexual dysfunctions can cause limitations or inability performing wholesome sexual acts. Adequate sexual function is an important and very complex sphere of the quality of an individual's life, and which is essentially influenced by optimal functioning of pelvic floor muscles. Physiotherapist’s role in regaining function of pelvic floor muscles is focused on teaching correct activation and relaxation in order to maintain appropriate muscle tension which in turn can increase sexual satisfaction in both sexes and prevent any new development or further deterioration of sexual dysfunction. We presented different mechanisms of sexual dysfunctions and described anatomy and physiology of pelvic floor muscles in detail. We also demonstrated the process of appropriate training of pelvic floor muscles including different methods and techniques used in physiotherapy with the aim of improving muscle function. Based on our scientific literature we answered our research question, namely training of the pelvic floor muscles is effective in improvement of sexual function in sexual dysfunctions. Furthermore, the training can alleviate the symptoms of sexual dysfunctions with both sexes. It is more effective if patients learn the correct contraction of the pelvic floor muscles in combination of biofeedback given by a professional physiotherapist rather than if they do it on their own.
