Abstract

Pregledali smo dve vrsti besedil: poročila in komentarje.

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂPOWER OF LANGUAGE - SELECTION OF FACTS AND WORDS
Secondary abstract: The author analyses language and style of reports and commentaries in Slovene daily newspapers regarding Slovenia's integration into NATO. The press coverage shows a usage of language means (idioms, metaphors, substandard words) with which journalists appeal to readers, evaluate and persuade. This is a deviation from genre and language conventions. On the other hand, commentaries are poor on foregrounding events, or they become stories full of substandard (oral) elements and melodramatisation, suggesting a tabloidization of Slovene newspapers. Since language is a "highly constructive mediator," its power is intensified in these newspapers, because of a (mis)useof stylistically marked, linguistic means instead of the employment of information and verified facts, and by the use of everyday language and "average" addressees in the commentaries.
