Abstract

Social support for elderly in gender perspective |
Secondary abstract: |
Sufficient social support is one of very important factors of ensuring quality of every day life in older population. Differences between women and men were studied on a representative sample of the elderly in Slovenia (2002) using hierarchical and k-means cluster analysis. Five types of social support networks that were found among women have diverse demographic and network characteristics. Only three groups were found among men and they differ by thenetwork characteristics. Other dissimilarities were found between clusters, such as the frequency of formal support providers and the number of elderly without any support providers. Such variety can be attributed to structural or dispositional differences between women and men. However, formal providers of social support should be aware of gender specific support needs. |
