Abstract

Secondary title: DOPING IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS
Secondary abstract: The focus of this research is use of illicit performance - enhancing drugs (hereinafter referred to as doping) in professional sport. Due to today’s fast development of the pharmaceutical industry, very complex drugs are being used and sadly, too often. Man has begun to use doping for different reasons. Some did it for pleasure, others to do battle, and some did it to enhance performance in sport, which is the segment that predominantly receives the most attention. Subsequently, main reasons will be presented that are crucial for prohibition of doping and for operation of organizations that are fighting against doping on national and global scale. The legal system that regulates this field is presented in the framework of national fight against doping. Part of which is the National Anti - doping Commission with its anti - doping policy, where the conduct of doping control is defined. We also presented the black market of performance enhancing drugs, which is widespread among amateurs and professionals worldwide and also nationwide. We conducted a survey which helped us to determine how common the use of illicit performance - enhancing drugs among professional athletes is. We wanted to find out to what extent do they realize the risks that doping can cause and how far were they willing to go to be successful, achieve great results and become famous. We conclude and confirm the fact, which many authors have already discussed, that doping is a serious problem in today’s professional sport. A staggering 52 percent of survey respondents admitted having used doping, and almost half of them were encouraged to do so by their coach. Also interesting is the information that 83 percent of respondents would use doping to make more money.
