Abstract

Secondary abstract: In the master’s thesis we researched the issue of security issues faced by the inhabitants of the Slovenian countryside. During the study of the forms of rural crime, we found out that the most prominent ones were property crimes. We have learned that the presence of fear among rural population has a significant impact on their quality of life, most notable are the concerns and vulnerabilities of rural younger and older women and adolescents, who are most often victims of victimization. After reviewing the literature, we realized that people in rural areas are reluctant to share their experiences with others and are less likely to report crimes for any reasons related to social cohesion and police efficiency, which has through intensive action and preventative measures in the local community a significant impact on ensuring and preventing rural crime. Such elements of security challenges are the cause of an unexplored area, which has stimulated a desire for further research, finding improvements and solutions. A secondary analysis of data from a national study on victimization on farms titled “Research on control and crime prevention on farms” was performed. We studied the opinions and views of Slovenian rural residents and farmers on concerns about crimes and problems of deviant behaviour in their rural area. Our findings show that farmers tend to be more concerned about crime than other rural residents. The situation is quite similar in the perception of the problems of deviant behaviour, where farmers compared to the rural population are more aware of the severity of environmental threats or violence against people and animals as well as other offenses. We also answered the research question on whether there are differences in satisfaction with the quality of police work according to the farmers` age and gender. The older generation of farmers is slightly more satisfied with the quality of police work in their area if compared to the younger generation of farmers. Based on the results of the analysis concerning the gender of farmers, we found no differences in the average satisfaction with the work of the police.
