Abstract

Secondary title: Digital tools and refugee connectivity: developing applications during the Covid-19 epidemic
Secondary abstract: The following thesis examines the functionality of mobile applications for migrants. The paper is based on various theoretical points as well as the interviews. To use the technology effectively, smart tools and applications need to be adapted to the migrants’ specific needs. The method of participatory design is a successful way of making them more effective and user friendly. Interviews with six people with experience in participatory refugee application design and cooperation with refugees in the field provide an insight into the migrants’ needs. Furthermore, specific suggestions for applications’ creation were presented. The results of this study point out several infrastructural obstacles for the effective use of digital tools amongst the target users. Based on the research’s results, digital tools need to be developed to reach the digitally illiterate migrant groups as well. Moreover, they need to contain accurate, updated, and practical information for the migrants. The main suggestion is to change the universal guidelines for the applications’ developers in order to address the bigger picture of the problem and, especially, to meet the needs of the most vulnerable groups of people.
