Abstract

V magistrskem delu smo raziskovali duševno zdravje slovenskih poklicnih gasilcev.

Secondary title: Psychopathological Symptoms and Positive Mental Health of Slovenian Professional Firefighters
Secondary abstract: Firefighters must be ready to respond to a broad range of emergencies every duty day. Therefore, firefighting can be considered a high-risk occupation with respect to traumatic stress exposure as they are regularly exposed to both physical and psychological risks. This study investigated mental health of Slovenian professional firefighters with the aim of determining the prevalence of stress, anxiety, depression on one hand, and prevalence of positive mental health and resilience on the other hand. Our main research interest was to examine the relationships between the mentioned constructs and other factors: personality traits, length of service, rank and fire departments. We explored the differences between firefighters in psychological symptoms and positive mental health according to fire departments and ranks. Additionally, we wanted to determine whether personality traits, resilience, years of service and rank prove to be important predictors of psychological symptoms and positive mental health. The set of the questionnaires were administered on the sample of 319 professional firefighters from all Slovenian professional fire departments. The prevalence of psychopathological symptoms was a bit lower in comparison to the results of Slovenian population. On the contrary, the prevalence of positive mental health was slightly higher than the average of Slovenian population. We assessed the resilience to be high in firefighters. The results showed statistically significant medium correlation between the psychopathological symptoms and positive mental health. Further results showed correlations between resilience, emotional stability, agreeableness, consciousness, extraversion, and psychopathological symptoms and positive mental health, respectively. Moreover, resilience positively correlated with four mentioned personal traits as well. Analysis of the results revealed differences only in psychopathological symptoms among firefighters regarding ranks. Neuroticism, agreeableness and resilience proved to be important predictors of psychological symptoms, while resilience, neuroticism, consciousness and extraversion predicted positive mental health. Overall, these findings indicate the importance of investigating both dimensions of mental health, which can contribute to better understanding of the mental state of professional firefighters and presents the basis for better interventions for them.
