Abstract

Secondary title: Review and significance of probiotic metabolites
Secondary abstract: Introduction: With a systematic review of literature using the PRISMA method, we classified probiotics with regard to metabolites. Due to the positive effects of probiotics on human health, we wanted to analyse, which metabolites they form and in which groups we can classify them. With the master’s thesis, we wanted to answer three research questions that arose during the review of literature. Methods: We collected the data from Slovenian and English literature, which had to be in English. We searched for it in four different databases of professional articles with the help of keywords and Boolean operators. Out of 9.713 articles, we then used a diagram according to PRISM recommendations to review and finally use 49 sources of literature, among which were transparent and original scientific articles. Results: We found that there are various metabolites of probiotics. Some metabolites are more researched then others. We divided the metabolites into bacteriocins, short chain fatty acids and other metabolites. We found that certain bacteriocins are formed by probiotics of the same genus, for instance plantaricin, pediocin, gasericin and coagulin. Discussion and conclusion: Based on the results, we can also conclude that each probiotic, which forms a characteristic metabolite, can be identified and recognized by it. Metabolites of probiotics can help in the prevention and treatment of many diseases.
